March being both Women’s History Month and Disability Awareness Month is a perfect time to recognize Judy Heumann . Heumann is an American disability rights activist, who is recognized internationally as a leader in the disability community. Born with polio, Judy Heumann was only 5 years old when she was first denied her right to attend school. Ms. Heumann’s activism inspired the ADA, or Americans with Disabilities Act, which was signed into law in 1990 by President Bill Clinton. She has served in the Clinton and Obama administrations, and she was the World Bank’s first advisor on disability and development. Heumann is the author of a memoir, Being Heumann, and her story was featured in the Netflix documentary Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution (2020).
